Our 10-Day Scotland Road Trip

Day 1 – Arrival in Scotland

After landing in Edinburgh, we picked up our rental car and stocked up on a few essentials for the days ahead. We grabbed a quick dinner before making the short drive to Perth, where we spent our first night.

Rather than staying in Edinburgh, we chose to head straight to Perth. It gave us a relaxed evening after travelling and meant we could wake up closer to the Highlands, ready to start exploring first thing the next morning.

Day 2 – Cairngorms National Park & Loch Ness

Our first full day in Scotland took us through the breathtaking landscapes of Cairngorms National Park. Rather than taking the fastest route, we followed the scenic Snow Roads Scenic Route, one of the country's most beautiful drives. Winding through mountain passes, quiet valleys and charming villages, this route offers countless opportunities to stop and take in the views.

Along the way, we visited places such as Braemar, Ballater and Balmoral Castle, with plenty of scenic viewpoints scattered throughout the Cairngorms. If you're visiting during the colder months, you may even be lucky enough to see snow covering the surrounding peaks. By the end of the afternoon, we arrived at Loch Ness, where we enjoyed dinner overlooking Scotland's most famous loch before spending the night in the nearby village of Fort Augustus.

Day 3 – Exploring the Isle of Skye

After visiting Loch Ness, we made our way to the Isle of Skye, one of Scotland's most spectacular destinations. We spent the day exploring the island's famous Trotternish Loop, a scenic route filled with dramatic cliffs, waterfalls and some of Scotland's most iconic landscapes.

Our first stop was the colourful harbour town of Portree, the perfect place to grab a coffee before continuing north. From there, we hiked to the Old Man of Storr, admired the views from Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls, explored the rugged coastline at Brothers Point and finished the day with the unforgettable Quiraing hike. If you only have one day on Skye, this route offers some of the island's very best scenery. That evening, we drove to the charming village of Stein, where we spent the night overlooking the peaceful shores of Loch Bay.

Day 4 – The West Coast of the Isle of Skye

We spent our second day on the Isle of Skye exploring the island's spectacular west coast. Our first stop was the beautiful Fairy Glen, followed by a visit to the historic Dunvegan Castle, the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland. From there, we continued to the iconic Neist Point Lighthouse, where a short walk rewards you with breathtaking views over the rugged coastline and the Atlantic Ocean.

In the afternoon, we stopped at the Talisker Distillery, Scotland's oldest working distillery on Skye, before ending the day with a walk to the beautiful Fairy Pools. By the end of the day, we left Skye and drove to Fort William, ready to continue our road trip through the Scottish Highlands the following morning.

Day 5 – Exploring Glencoe

Before heading to Glencoe, we stopped at the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. Even if you don't catch the Jacobite Steam Train, it's a worthwhile stop and a must-visit for Harry Potter fans.

From Glenfinnan, we continued towards Glencoe, one of the most breathtaking regions in the Scottish Highlands. We visited some of Glencoe's most iconic spots, including the Glencoe Visitor Centre, Glencoe Lochan, the Three Sisters Viewpoint and Signal Rock. If the weather is on your side, we'd also recommend fitting in one of the many hiking trails, as Glencoe is a paradise for walkers.

Before leaving the valley, we took the scenic detour along the Road to Glen Etive, stopped at the viewpoint overlooking Buachaille Etive Mòr, and finished with a visit to Loch Tulla and the iconic white cottage. That evening, we continued to Loch Lomond, where we spent the night before exploring Scotland's first national park the following day.

Day 6 – Queen Elizabeth Forest Park & Stirling

We started the day exploring Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, one of Scotland's most beautiful forest parks. We visited The Lodge Forest Visitor Centre and enjoyed the peaceful surroundings of Loch Katrine. If it's open during your visit, we also recommend driving the scenic Three Lochs Forest Drive, a beautiful circular route with several viewpoints over the surrounding lochs and forests.

In the afternoon, we continued to Stirling Castle, one of Scotland's most important historic landmarks. Perched high on Castle Hill, the castle offers incredible views over the surrounding countryside. Before leaving Stirling, we also recommend stopping at the nearby National Wallace Monument, built in honour of Scottish hero Sir William Wallace.

After exploring Stirling, we continued to Glasgow, where we spent the evening enjoying the city's atmosphere. Whether you're looking for a great restaurant, live music or simply a relaxing evening, Glasgow is the perfect place to end the day.

Day 7 – Discovering Glasgow

After days of exploring Scotland's breathtaking landscapes, we spent the day discovering the vibrant city of Glasgow. Known for its impressive Victorian architecture, lively atmosphere and thriving arts scene, Glasgow offers a completely different side of Scotland.

We wandered through the city's colourful Street Art Trail, visited the impressive University of Glasgow and explored the peaceful Glasgow Botanic Gardens. We also spent some time around George Square, visited Glasgow Cathedral and the historic Necropolis, and ended the afternoon with a drink in the charming Ashton Lane, one of the city's most picturesque streets.

Day 8 – Exploring Edinburgh's Historic Centre

We spent our first day exploring Edinburgh, one of Europe's most beautiful capitals. With its medieval streets, historic landmarks and cosy cafés, the city is the perfect place to slow down after a week of road-tripping through the Highlands.

We wandered along the Royal Mile, visited the impressive Edinburgh Castle and explored colourful streets such as Victoria Street and West Bow, said to have inspired Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter books. We also stopped by Greyfriars Kirkyard, another must-visit for Harry Potter fans, before finishing the day at Edinburgh's festive Christmas Market. If the weather isn't on your side, the Scottish National Gallery is an excellent free alternative and well worth a visit.

Day 9 – Christmas in Edinburgh

Our second day in Edinburgh was all about enjoying the city's festive atmosphere. We visited St Giles' Cathedral, climbed Calton Hill for panoramic views over the city and spent some more time wandering through the Christmas markets.

If you're visiting Edinburgh during the festive season, there are plenty of seasonal activities to choose from, including Christmas at the Botanics, an illuminated evening trail through the Royal Botanic Garden, or a classical candlelight concert in one of the city's historic churches. Edinburgh is a city where it's easy to slow down. Spend some time browsing shops, enjoy a cosy pub or simply wander the cobbled streets. It's the perfect way to end your Scottish road trip!

Day 10 – Travel Day

After an unforgettable ten days exploring Scotland, it was time to head home. We packed our bags, enjoyed one last morning in Edinburgh and made our way to the airport for our flight home.
